The best advice I can give to people starting a clothing line or selling apparel on a retail level, is to “Keep it simple”. At least in the beginning. Let’s look at this hoodie above from our friends at Mavericks Surf Company. They are pretty smart when it comes to selling their apparel online and in their shop down in Half Moon Bay. What they do that works really well, is to use garments that are more unique than the average garment. Then, printing their apparel with simple one color logos and images. This is a great way to keep their production costs low, and being able to use the uniqueness of the garments to maximize their profit on their sales. In this particular case, the dark Camo hoodie is the same price as those average black or colored hoodies. But because it is different, and more unique, they are able to sell the garments for much more than that solid color hoodie. In most cases, it is your brand that the customer is buying, and not the particular image. Look at Nike, Adidas, North Face, etc. It is rare that they have any images, that have 5 colors in the image!
